Out of the sprawling compost heap
an immense vine sprouts,
mottled leaves big-hearted
as an elephant child’s–
melon, maybe, or giant
mutant squash?—Time will tell…
The neighbors’ tall Asiatic lily,
gorgeous as a geisha, leans
over the intervening wall,
her eight or so amazing heads
nodding royal approbation.
Within each pink blossom
electric-orange stamens
dance in the breeze–
punctuation marks
in this language of excess.
